Flavor Of The Weak
Album: American Hi-Fi
Year: 2001

Stacy Jones' crush is dating a jerk which frustrates him in the stiff "Flavor Of The Weak."

A fantastic drum solo opens the single, setting high expectations. In the first verse, he says the girl he likes is oblivious to her boyfriend hitting on her friends. She'll take any treatment from him, including letting him turn her into his maid. On his wall, he has Sports Illustrated models which he tells her she should aspire to be. If she got breast implants, she would be as beautiful as they are. However, she loves him.
"She paints her nails and she don't know/He's got her best friend on the phone/She'll wash her hair/His dirty clothes are all he gives to her/And he's got posters on the wall/Of all the girls he wished she was/And he's everything to her."

In the chorus, her boyfriend is only using her for sex. He skips class to smoke weed and play videogames all day. If Jones were to tell her how he feels about her boyfriend, she would stop being friends with him.
"Her boyfriend, he don't know/Anything about her/He's too stoned, Nintendo/I wish that I could make her see/She's just the flavor of the weak."

In the second verse, he says she goes over to her boyfriend's house every Friday night. However, she sits there and watches cable. She wears her prettiest outfit. But to him, she's invisible. He's interested in the television show and not her. In his bedroom, he posts pictures of all his ex-girlfriends to show how desirable he is.
"It's Friday night and she's all alone/He's a million miles away/She's dressed to kill/But the TV's on/He's connected to the sound/And he's got pictures on the wall/Of all the girls he's loved before/And she knows all his favorite songs."

The chorus is sung again.

Another fantastic drum solo follows.

In the bridge, Jones emphasizes the guy is a loser.
"Her boyfriend, he don't know/Anything about her/He's too stoned, he's too stoned/He's too stoned, he's too stoned."

The chorus is sung again.

At the end, he says she's just another girl to her boyfriend. But to him, she's special.
"Yeah she's the flavor of the weak/She makes me weak."

The day he found out his crush was going out with her boyfriend, his heart sank. The guy has a bad reputation – he chews girls and spits them out like gum. They mean nothing to him, except sex. She deserves a guy who will take out to a nice dinner and talk to her about whatever is on her mind. His dilemma, though, leaves him helpless. He doesn't want to risk losing her. She would hate him forever if he tried to tell her to stop dating him.

Jones' discerning vocals belie the banal lyrics. He's downplaying his smarts in order to pander to a younger audience who only heard of the grunge era from VH-1’s "I Love the 90's."

The drumming is amazing. It snaps and curls without breaking a sweat.

"Flavor Of The Weak" is typical current post-punk featuring a story about a clueless girl with the bad boyfriend and the sweet guy who likes the girl. Check out Letters to Cleo (Jones' former band) single "Here And Now" instead.
