Music Review: Sixpence None The Richer "Breathe Your Name"

Sixpence None The Richer

Breathe Your Name
Album: Divine Discontent
Year: 2002

Leigh Nash looks to God to ease the tension in her life in the oafish ballad "Breathe Your Name."

Quizzical guitars open the single, setting a ruminative tone. In the first verse, Nash says she goes to work everyday, feeling restless and uneasy.
"It's every day/I'm in this place/I feel this way/I feel the same/It's every day/I'm in this place/I feel this way/I feel the same."

She thinks shes' imagining it and analyzing the situation too deeply. She recalls every reason she doesn't like her job and chooses the most important one. Then, she asks God what she should do.
"Is it all inside my head/Is it all inside my head/I'll view the list/And take my pick/I view my faith/And make a choice/'Cause it's nobody else's but mine."

In the chorus, she says God is with her and helps make the right decisions. She whispers his name softly whenever she needs guidance to navigate the stress within her life.
"But you are in my heart/I can feel your beat/And you move my mind/From behind the wheel/When I lose control/I can only breathe your name/I can only breathe your name."

In the second verse, she says she has to have meaning and structure in order to be fulfilled. God is a part of realizing it. She adds that faith is immortal and loyal.
"So many days within this race/I need the truth/I need some grace/I need the path/To find my place/I need some truth/I need some grace/The part of you/That's part of me/We'll never die/We'll never leave/And it's nobody else's but mine."

The chorus is sung again.

An enlightened piano solo follows.

In the bridge, she says God takes part in her decision-making.
"You'lll view the list/And take your pick/You'll view my faith/And make a choice/'Cause it's nobody else's but yours."

The chorus is sung twice.

Nash says that she looks to him again to end the single.
"I can only breathe your name/I can only breathe your name."

Faith is imperative to Nash. Without it, she couldn't make it through the tough days. It provides her with a purpose, calms her fears, and gives her hope.

Her loyal, peaceful vocals crisply convey the weight upon her shoulders and the exhilaration of when it's been lifted.

The gauche arrangement trips on the repetitive lyrics and misplaced notes. It brushes itself off and recovers briefly in the chorus. But it's short-lived.

"Breathe Your Name" has an intriguing message but it's terribly off-balance.
