Music Review: Janet Jackson "Escapade"

Janet Jackson

Escapade
Album: Rhythm Nation
Year: 1990

Janet Jackson runs into an old friend and spends the weekend with him in the buoyant "Escapade."

Jovial keyboards open the single, setting an extroverted tone. In the first verse, she was walking to get a cup of coffee when she spots an old guy friend from high school. He recognizes her and reluctantly returns her smile. She invites him to go out with her and anytime during the weekend.
"As I was walkin' by/Saw you standin' there/With a smile/Lookin' shy/You caught my eye/Thought you'd want to hang/For a while/Well I'd like to be with you/And you know it's Friday too/I hope you can find the time/This weekend to relax and unwind."

In the pre-chorus, she tells that her brain is mush from finishing a project at the firm where she works. She's already gone to the bank and has some spending money. She says wants to have some crazy fun. She says it'll be an adventure.
"My mind's tired/I've worked so hard all week/Cashed my check/I'm ready to go/I promise you/I'll show you such a good time."

In the chorus she says tell him that today is his stress-free day. Work is forbidden to talk about work, parents, and other bothersome issues. She says they have the whole city in front of them and nothing but to time to enjoy it.
"Come on baby let's get away/Let's save your troubles for another day/Come go with me we've got it made/Let me take you on an escapade (let's go)."

In the bridge, she says they will have fun as they tour the city and be spontaneous.
“Es-ca-pade/We'll have a good time/Es-ca-pade/Leave your worries behind/Es-ca-pade/You can be mine/Es-ca-pade/An escapade."

In the second verse, she tells him to relax and let loose. She says they make plans to do certain things. However, if it turns out to be lame, they can move onto the next thing.
"So don't hold back/Just have a good time/We'll make the rules up/As we go along/And break them all/If we're not havin' fun."

The chorus is sung twice.

The laid-back mandolin has a solo. At the end of it, Jackson calls for him to join her.
"C'mon!"

The chorus is sung again.

The pre-chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung three times to close the single.

Fun. Fun. Fun. After a long, arduous week of work, it's all she’s interesting in having. Reuniting with a old friend is an unexpected treat and She cajoles him to break free of his cautious demeanor while she gets to know him again.

Her bright vocals are welcoming and thoughtful. She's up for anything and likes including people.

The sprightly arrangement is effervescent, bubbling with adventure and excitement.

The electrifying "Escapade" is an adventure worth taking.
