How should one repair laminate flooring that is peeling?

Looking for suggestions on ways to repair laminate flooring that is losing the simulated wood surface...
The surface on the laminate in question is not very thick, and apparently not very durable. It's peeled up in a few spots in heavy traffic areas. I'm looking for ways to repair it that would most importantly protect the fiber/wood material that makes up the bulk of the floor. If it looks ok, great, and I'd like to avoid it looking nasty and not even coming close to matching, but I'm not sure I'll be able to get a solution that works.
Perhaps get some self adhesive backed wood grain wall-paper/shelf paper type stuff, but am I likely to even find that stuff in a place like Lowes or Home Depot?
Suggestions anyone?
