Music Review: Teddy Geiger "For You I Will (Confidence)"

Teddy Geiger

For You I Will (Confidence)
Album: Underage Thinking
Year: 2006

Teddy Geiger is intent on confessing his feelings to a classmate in the rambling "For You I Will (Confidence)."

Strait-laced guitars open the single, setting a vital tone. In the first verse, he's taking a walk through his neighborhood, thinking of how he could approach the girl he likes. His world seems to be lacking at the moment. If he doesn't say how he feels, he will always wonder. If he does, he could be rejected. At this point, he can't take the not knowing. He stares at her in class, twirling her hair and grins. It's incredibly cute how she wraps it around her finger, then stops, and quickly takes it apart. She's made it into an art.
"Wondering the streets, in a world underneath it all/Nothing seems to be, nothing tastes as sweet/As what I can't have/Like you and the way that you're twisting your hair/'Round your finger/Tonight I'm not afraid to tell you/What I feel about you."

In the first chorus, he says he's going to take that leap and pull her aside after class. He will tell her his feelings. He's going to have to be bold and toss his insecurities aside.
"I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have/And cannon ball into the water/I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have/For you I will/For you I will."

In the second verse, he explains that when he gets nervous, he can't speak. Some many things that he had planned to say to her are swimming in his head and doesn't know which to fish out of the water. He compliments her on her warm eyes, saying he feels at ease with her. He inquires if she has seen in the halls or at lunchtime. He says he's seen her everyday, either talking with friends or getting books out of her locker. He says he wants her to know.
"Forgive me if I st-stutter/From all of the clutter in my head/'Cause I could fall asleep in those eyes/Like a water bed/Do I seem familiar, I've crossed you in hallways/A thousand times, no more camouflage/I want to be exposed, and not be afraid to fall."

The second chorus is sung. In it, he adds the fact that she's unattainable attracts him all the more. However, he'll never know otherwise.
"I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have/And cannon ball into the water/I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have/For you I will/You always want what you can't have/But I've got to try/I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have/For you I will/For you I will/For you I will/For you."

In the bridge, he says he would take her to the mall and put candles everywhere. Jazzy music would play in the background. He would get dinner from the food court and they would eat. Then, she would go to all her favorite stores without bustling about. He says he would yell her name so loud at the high school, everyone would hear it. If it meant he could get her attention, he would do it.
"If I could dim the lights in the mall/And create a mood I would/Shout out your name so it echoes in every room/I would/That's what I'd do/That's what I'd do/That's what I'd do/To get through to you."

The second chorus is sung to close the song.

He's had a crush on the girl since sophomore year. They sat next to each other briefly in a class. They would talk a little before class would start. However, it only lasted a semester and it never evolved from there. However, he hopes that she remembers him and maybe, just maybe, she's been thinking about the guy she used to talk to about the teacher's bald head. He thinks he has a chance. However, he has to believe in himself. It's only up to him to make things happen for himself.

Geiger's sincere vocals are idealistic and youthful. Unlike John Mayer (which could be his vocal twin), he's charming and soft. Although he strains to get the words out fast enough in the chorus, he is still able carry the song effectively.

The sedate arrangement has sudden bursts of gusto in the verses. Then, returns to its normal state as though nothing happened. The bumps and tumbles disrupt the contemplative mood. It's out of nowhere. By the bridge, Geiger has a handle on it. However, it's too late.

The major fault of "For You I Will (Confidence)" is it's derivative of the "sensitive guy with a guitar" genre.
