About A Girl
Album: MTV Unplugged In New York
Year: 1994

Kurt Cobain dates a girl he doesn't like very much for companionship in the sensitive "About A Girl."

A lonesome guitar opens the single, setting a despondent tone. In the first verse, he says he wants a person who shares a few things in common with. He would listen to his girlfriend and offer her support. He thinks one girl in particular, who's talked to him a couple times, would actually like to be his friend. However, he wishes she would get his attempts at flirtation.
“I need an easy friend/I do with an ear to lend/I do think you fit this shoe/I do, won't you have a clue."

In the chorus, he says he'll hang out with her friends and hopefully become close with them. Meanwhile, she will care less about what he does. But he's been looking forward to seeing her alone without her friends.
"I'll take advantage while/You hang me out to dry/But I can't see you every night/Free/I do."

In the second verse, he says that he's a bother to her. She's using him to show him off to her friends. However, he's surprised at how much he likes her. He doesn't understand why she isn't starting to like him more. He's been a great boyfriend to her so far.
"I'm standing in your line/I do hope you have the time/I do pick a number, too/I do keep a date with you."

The chorus is sung again.

The lonesome guitar has a solo.

The first verse is sung again. However, he's frustrated that she's not interested in him anymore nd he could lose all his new friends.

The second chorus is sung again to close the song.
"I'll take advantage while/You hang me out to dry/But I can't see you every night/ But I can't see you every night/Free/I do/I do/I do/I do."

All Cobain wants is company. People he could talk about everything and nothing with. Finding a girlfriend seemed to be the quickest way to find a group. However, he knows that it's short-term and soon, he will be without anyone again. He would like to have a permenant set of friends. But he doesn't know how to go about it.

With his pained vocals, he questions everything he's done and believes somehow her not liking him back is his fault. He's insecure and shy. He didn't expect her to fall in love. However, he hoped she would.

The acoustic arrangement improves on the original Bleach album rock version. First, an extra minute is added on and it's slowed down considerably. Whereas the original is impatient and demanding, the unplugged version is introspective and naked. Every letdown and pipe dream is exposed.

"About A Girl" is absolutely perfect.
