Music Review: Uncle Kracker "Follow Me"

Uncle Kracker

Follow Me
Album: Double Wide
Year: 2001

Uncle Kracker gives his girlfriend the minimum amount of effort in the condescending "Follow Me."

A puerile guitar opens the single, setting a casual tone. In the first verse, he says his girlfriend is not very bright. She can't recall their first date or even figure out why they are still together. However, he says it's because she feels like she can be herself around him. He's like her in a lot of ways.
"You don't know how you met me/You don't know why/You can't turn around and say goodbye/All you know is when I'm with you/I make you free/And swim through your veins like a fish in the sea/I'm singin'."

In the chorus, he says she needs to be with him and she'll be in his care. When she's sleeping in their bed, he'll put the covers by her. Then, he says that she wouldn't have as good with anyone else.
"Follow me everything is alright/I'll be the one to tuck you in at night/And if you/Want to leave I can guarantee/You won't find nobody else like me."

In the second verse, he says he bought her a cheap ring. He thinks if nobody notices, then it's ok. However, she feels awful for making him purchase it. But as far as he can tell, it's not bothering jher all that much. He believes he's secure in the relationship and she won't leave him.
"I'm not worried 'bout the ring you wear/Cause as long as no one knows than nobody can care/You're feelin' guilty and I'm well aware/But you don't look ashamed and baby I'm not scared/I'm singin'."

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, he says he's not wealthy nor can he give her the world. He's embarrassed about how he grew up and that he's poor. He says she will dump him for shallow reasons, like for not buying her enough stuff. He adds that he's commitment-phobic and that she shouldn't nag him about setting a date.
"Won't give you money/I can't give you the sky/You're better off if you don't ask why/I'm not the reason that you go astray and/We'll be all right if you don't ask me to stay."

The chorus is sung again.

The first verse is sung again.

The chorus is sung twice to close the song.

Uncle Kracker uses excuse after excuse to infantilize and control his girlfriend. She can't question his background although he knows about hers. He can buy her crap and she can't say anything. If she does, then he will say she's a vapid and not the girl he thought. To shut her up about marriage, he gets her a ring. But she can't tell anybody and she shouldn't expect him to follow through on it.

His oily, arrogant vocals stink of foolishness. He's pleased with himself for finding a woman who will let him call the shots.

The submissive guitar and finger snaps are enable his boorish behavior and applaud it.

The sexist "Follow Me" is as a romantic as having takeout on pile of manure.

It's always made me nauseous. I dunno if he's trying to do a slice-of-life thing or if he really feels good about that kind of behavior, but I'll just say the guy he's writing about is an asshole, and if the shoe fits him...

I always wondered what a love song written by David koresh and dedicated to his wives on the compound would sound like. Now I know. Thanks, Uncle Kracker!
