Days Go By
Album: Dirty Vegas
Year: 2001
Steve Smith can't shake his ex-girlfriend from his life in the dazed "Days Go By."

Whirling synths open the single, setting a disoriented tone. Over the chilly beat, an upset Smith says "you." After the beat pauses briefly, he repeats "you" again.

In the first verse, he can feel the warm touch of her fingers on his back. He can hear her soft voice in his ear. He's having trouble pulling himself back together. For her, it was the last time. She couldn't handle his detachment from her and left him. He thinks he's doomed to be lonely. He's been sobbing all evening and numb from the pain.
"You are still a whisper on my lips/A feeling at my fingertips/That's pulling at my skin/You leave me when I'm at my worst/Feeling as if I've been cursed/Bitter cold within."

In the first verse, it's been weeks since they broke up. Yet, she occupies his every thought. She was involved in his everyday life. It's tough for him to adjust to being single again.
"Days go by and still I think of you/Days when I couldn't live my life without you/Days go by and still I think of you/Days when I couldn't live my life without you/Without you/Without you."

The synths crackle and pace, which segues to the first verse.

The chorus is sung twice.

Smith says he's useless with her gone.
"Without you/Without you/Without you."

He thought she would always be there. He counted on her to help get through his problems. Even if he didn't speak much about them. Her presence was enough to console him. He took her granted and now is left to pick up the pieces.

Smith's self-loathing vocals strain to blame her for his heartache. However, he mostly points the finger at himself. He didn't let her know how much he cared about her. And now he won't have the chance. However, at times, he's sluggish and can't keep with the synths.
The synths glower and lurk behind the lyrics. It provides the emotion that Smith lacks in his vocals. They do the bulk of the work to keep the song going. Without the synths, the song would wither into a pool of mediocrity.

"Days Go By" is a step up from other mainstream dance songs which have crossed over into the States.
