Try seeing what is in the event log (Alt-click on My computer->manage->Events.

Look under the three different categories, especially for "little-red-Xes"

You could also put you install CD in the drive, open the command prompt, and type in sfc /scannow This will run system file checker, and restore any missing system files or .dlls that may be missing or corrupted.

See if either of those get you anywhere.

Would file checker not run? or did it run and not fix the problem?

Was there anything notable on the Event log? (You can also get their by typing eventvwr.msc in the run dialog.)

I assume from your posts that explorer is not running, if you bring up the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) go to "New Task" and type in explorer.exe does it start?

their is nothing in the Event log about explorer.

Just to be sure, are you talking about Windows Eplorer, the shell, or Internet Explorer? If your shell isn't running, how are you getting to your browser and the event logs?

i am getting there by starting cmd or task manager and i downloaded via ftp explorer from my other computer. explorer i replaced and it still has the same error.

I tried posting earlier, but got a server time-out error.

DL, I'd just go ahead and do a repair reinstall if I were you.

It's a nuisance, but it will usually fix most problems.

they're both the same

they work!

Dose that mean your problem is solved....or just that the links work?

the links work. i am still fixing the problem. i can not get my drive to boot.

Yeah, there must have been a delay while the server replicated the edit.
i can not get my drive to boot.

If your drive was dying that could also explain the error messages you were getting if the system files it was trying to use were on a bad disk sector.

Sounds like it's time for a new drive and a fresh install. If you have important files on the drive that is dying (dead?) then don't try to use it until you get a fresh install on a new drive. Then you can try to recover the data off your old drive by connecting it as a slave drive or as an external USB drive. The more you try to use that drive, the greater the chances of rendering any data unrecoverable.

Good luck.

i can not get my drive to boot.

Did you mean that you can't boot from your cd drive (as opposed to your boot drive)?
