Album: Irresistible
Year: 2001
Jessica Simpson's infatuation is taking control of her senses in the enraptured "Irresistible."
A euphoric guitar and worshipful background singers open the single, setting a devout tone. A breathless Simpson says there is something about the guy that causes her to swoon. She can't put her finger on it, though. However, instinctively she knows he's the one.
"You know I don't know what it is/But everything about you is so irresistible."
In the first verse, her friends say he's out of her league. She tells them she will allow herself to feel excited and intoxicated after talking with him. She knows the rules of flirting like don't be overeager, play hard to get, etc. However, she yearns for him so much that she won't follow them. He asks her out on a date and she says yes.
"Don't you try and tell me that he's not my type/To hide what I feel inside /When he makes me weak with desire/I know that I'm supposed to make him wait/Let him think I like the chase but I can't/Stop fanning the fire, I know I meant to say no."
In the chorus, she says that he's a fantastic guy. Once her friends meet him, they will think so, too. She says she is overwhelmed by her adoration for him. She says her attraction to him is stronger than any metaphysical force. He captures her attention like no other boy has.
"But he's irresistible/Up close and personal /Now inescapable/I can hardly breathe, more than just/Physical deeper than spiritual/His ways are powerful/And irresistible to me (yeah yeah, I can hardly breathe)."
In the second verse, she explains to her friend that she's tempted to kiss him. Their second date lasted until 2 a.m. She had to practically drag herself away from him. They talked about everything. He even divulged that he really liked her. She's unsure of what to do. This isn't a normal dating situation. She can't think straight and downplays her feelings. She wants to tell him they should not tiptoe around each other. He gives her a goodnight kiss and she floats on air.
"Don't you think I'm trying to tell my heart what's right/That I should really say goodnight/But I can't stop myself from falling (falling)/Maybe I'll tell him that I feel the same/That I don't want to play no game (No)/Cause when I feel his arms wrapped around me/I know I'm meant to say no (I meant to say no)."
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she says it's the most stirring relationship in her life.
"Can't you see whenever he's close to me/I really find it hard to breathe/He's so irresistible/Baby you know it's more than just spiritual/His kisses are powerful."
The chorus is sung once.
Simpson says that the guy is a great catch for her.
"Irresistible to me."
The chorus is sung again.
She adds an "irresistible to me" to end the single.
In the single, she fights against the thrall at first. She quickly realizes she's powerless. Simpson's friends tell her she's getting carried away. However, she wants to give into her emotions and melt into him. Yet she feels guilty for letting herself be carefree. She wants to ditch the dating rules and be open with him. Playing coy will only make her lose him.
Simpson's smitten, solid vocals are spot on. She's mesmerized by him and he's the most awesome guy in the world to her. No one will change her mind.
The soaring string arrangement's praises her obsession as though it was a religion. Meanwhile, the adamant keyboards push through, making their presence known.
