Ubisoft announced today that they have acquired the rights to all things FarCry including a "perpetual license" to use the game's underlying engine, CryENGINE. FarCry and the CryENGINE were both owned and developed by German-based CryTek.
The agreement gives Ubisoft exclusive worldwide assignment of all property related to FarCry "including characters, likenesses, copyrights and environmental settings." This means that Ubisoft is free to publish sequels, add-ons, merchandise and any other derivative of the franchise that they may select.
"Far Cry is one of Ubisoft's most successful brands and this agreement is one further step in our strategy to constantly enrich our catalogue of fully owned brands. With Far Cry, we look forward to further consolidating our leading position in the first person shooters genre" said Yves Guillemot, President & CEO of Ubisoft Entertainment.
