Enrique Igleasias won't admit his strong feelings for his best girl friend in the timid "Not In Love."
A studly guitar opens the single, setting a valiant tone. He asks Kelis if she's ready to start the song. She answers she's all set. He decides to get the single going.
In the first verse, he says that Kelis calls him on the phone. She tells him about her day and the lame date she had last night. He tries to mask his relief. When they go out together, he has trouble focusing on the road. All he sees are her long, lean legs. He passes off his distraction as a cough or a laugh.
In the pre-chorus, he thinks she’s gorgeous and can flaunt her beauty by moving a fingernail.
In the chorus, he knows it he can't fall in love with her. He doesn't have a chance. He dismisses it as temporary. It's just typical of him. He has these crushes all the time. He gets over them. However, he likes her company and hopes she won't ever leave his life.
In the second verse, Kelis is aware of his crush on her. She thinks, however, they don't have much a future together. It will be casual and enjoyable. She teases him, letting him think he has a chance. He asks how he can be with her.

In the second chorus, he adds that he has attempted to convince himself out of liking her. However, tonight he is unable to stop himself from feeling the attraction.
In the bridge, Kelis tells him that she's not ready to for a commitment. She's had a serious relationship before and she felt trapped. However, she would like spend her days with him and discover themselves.

He has liked dozens of girls. But there has always been Kelis, who has known is off-limits. But he can't control himself. He's taken her by her winsome smile and attractive body. When she starts screwing with his head, he falls for it without any question. It pains him that he can only be just friends with her. He wants more from her and will never get it.
Kelis provides no benefit to the song whatsoever. Her taunting, distant vocals are mean-spirited. She toys with her best friend's emotions and lets him think he could have one night with her. Then, she takes the rug underneath him and makes up excuses as to why she can't be with him.
Igleasias' flavorless, wussy vocals cause him to whine throughout. It's his big conflict and it's torturing him oh so much. He's been bugging his friends about it for months. Even his friends are sick of groaning and complaining that he could never have her. His compliments come across as dorky, not charming. He doesn't know how to act around women.
The indecisive uptempo arrangement nicks the guitar intro from Justin Timberlake’s "Like I Love You." It's tweaked just a little for legal reasons. Then it opts for a hushed, windy beat. To accommodate Kelis, some specks of R&B are blended into it. However, it doesn't mix well and ends up showing how shabbily it was pinned to the song.
