Music Review: Go-Go's "Automatic"

Go-Go's

Automatic
Album: Beauty and the Beat
Year: 1982

Belinda Carlisle dreams of the guy she has a crush on in the cryptic "Automatic."

A blazing guitar opens the single, setting a sultry tone. In the first verse, she says it's about 2 a.m. She flips the radio off and the house turns silent. Her imagination is running wild of her kissing her crush. She uncovers her bed and rests her head on the pillow. She falls asleep, thinking of his beautiful face.
"Quiet now/Still of night/Inside fire burning bright/Right moment/Laying down/Oh, still no sound."

In the chorus, she says it's her normal routine to think about him. It's an involuntary reaction.
"It's all automatic/No thought/Automatic."

In the second verse, she has to begun her dream about him. In it, she brushes his sun-kissed hair off his face. His skin has droplets of sweat, which she feels as takes her in his arms. Her heart is throbbing. They kiss passionately and he leads her to the bed. She has lost the concept of time and can't even remember her name.
"Golden hair/Skin glisten/Beating heart but don't listen/Angles sharp/Crash together/Time and consciousness sever."

In the second verse, she says her mind can only concentrate on him. Time has ceased to exist as the night continues to go on forever.
"Mind in automatic/Time stop/Automatic."

A thrilling guitar, which intentionally repeats the same riff four times, has a solo.

The first verse and second chorus are sung again.

The thrilling guitar riff ends the single.

In the single, Carlisle lusts for her crush. The dreams are the only where she can have him. Like most dreams, they are abstract and hazy. She can only remember the few juicy bits that made her smile in delight. The meaning isn't clear. To Jane Wiedlin’s credit (who has written some of the best band's songs), the song is as a private and silent as any intimate reverie.

Her secretive, seductive vocals provide clues as to what she could possibly be thinking about. Nonetheless, it's something personal for her. She will skim over it in conversation with friends, but she won't offer details.

"Automatic" is a mysterious, imaginative three minutes.
