No More Words
Album: Love Life
Year: 1984

Terri Nunn suspects that her boyfriend is indifferent to the relationship in the decisive "No More Words."

Discontented synths open the single, setting a skeptical tone. In the first verse, she says that while talking with him, he sounds genuine about his love for her. However, she thinks of how he invites his friends to watch football without letting her know or forgetting to tell her good luck on a project presentation. She doesn't know what to believe.
"You're talking it all sounds fair/You promise your love how much you care/I'm still listening and still unsure/Your actions are lacking, nothing is clear."

In the chorus, she inquires if he loves her. When he answers, he can't look her in the eye. It stings her, causing her to demand that he be honest with her.
"No more words/You're telling me you love me while you're looking away/No more words, no more words/And no more promises of love."

In the second verse, she says their relationship wasn't always one-sided. In the beginning, he said "I love you" with sincerity and appreciation. She tells him she wants someone in her life will continue to burn for her, long after the novelty has worn off. Flings and short-term affairs were purposeless and immature. She wasn't ever fully satsified.
"Remember when the words were new/They carried a meaning, a feeling so true/I'm looking for a long romance/Not a picture of passion or one time chance."

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, she tells him that he can deny his actions all he wants. However, it won't fulfill her. She's had suspicions he had checked out. But she didn't pay attention to them. His response to her question confirmed what's been in the back of her mind all along. She says there's no need to continue their relationship. He's bored and wants out.
"Don't fool yourself/Your empty passion won't satisfy me/I know, so don't pretend that you want me/You don'twant me, no!"

The chorus is sung again.

In the third verse, she says that when they have sex, he doesn't touch her tenderly or say that he loves her. It's like she's not even there. Her boyfriend says they are in a rut and they can solve the problem. Nunn dismisses it and tells him he's not obligated to stay. If he thinks they don't have a future, they should break up now before they waste any more time.
"We make love, and it's all the same/Your eyes show nothing, no lover's flame/Don't promise we can work it out/You can leave right now if you're feeling doubt."

The chorus is sung once.

An adlibbed chorus ends the single.
"No more words/You're telling me you love me you're looking away/No more words, no more words/And no more promises of love (No more words and no more promises)/No more words and no more promises of love."

Nunn can remember their first date. He brought her a flower. They walked around the city and discussed everything that meant something to them. He held her hand. About two months later, they became exclusive. He helped her parents to move out of their home. She bought some allergy medicine so he could his dog when they decided to live together. It's only three years later but for her it feels like several lifetimes ago.

Her wry vocals are rife with defeat and indignation. He knew from the start what she expected from a relationship. She's curious as to why he has been leading her on for so long. She also wonders what happened for him to not care anymore.

The authoritative synth arrangement underscores Nunn's vocals. It's cynical but there's a little hope that perhaps her instincts were wrong.

"No More Words" is a dynamic pop song.
