Music Review: Gwen Stefani "Crash"

Gwen Stefani

Crash
Album: Love.Angel.Music.Baby.
Year: 2006

Gwen Stefani coaches her boyfriend as they have sex in the titatilling "Crash."

The sound of a car engine and ringing synths open the single, setting a mirthful tone. Stefani opens with the bridge, telling her boyfriend to move his body forward and slink into her. She tells him that he’s done a good job and now to thrust with his hands in the air.
"Back it up, back it up/You got it, you got it/Put your hands up, put your hands up/You got it, you got it."

In the chorus, Stefani compares their lovemaking to race car driving. She tells him to push as fast and rough as he can.
"Drive back baby to me fast in your car/I'm here waiting, crash into me real hard."

In the first verse, she's putting on her lingerie and lights the candles around the room. She fantasizes that he is a famous race-car driver like Mario Andretti and is speeding to get home. She says she's lusty and eager for him to come home. Then, she will be able to divert his attention from the troubles of work to her flesh. It's going to be a romantic night for them.
"I wander 'round the room and I'm getting things ready/I picture you driving just like Mario Andretti/I got the cush, Kettle One, waiting for your engine/Your Grand Prix attention, it's gonna be a party.”

In the pre-chorus, she tells him to kiss her all over as she has phone sex with home on his way home from work. She notices that he's breathy and aroused
"Don't forget to make a U-turn/I see you left your blinker on/I got it rolled and ready here to burn/Meet me back at home."

The chorus is sung again.

Over a shimmery synth solo, she estimates the time until he arrives into their bedroom.
"Driving fast in your car/I've got you tracked on my radar."

In the second verse, she says that he's been her lover for a couple of years now. He satisfies her unlike anyone else and he's become like a drug for her. She adds that she wants him to cling to her skin like silk.
“It's just such a trip how you're still my speed racer/You got me so addicted just like a free baser/I want you all over me like L.A.M.B./So get here A.S.A.P./It's gonna be a party.”

The pre-chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung again.

Over another shimmery synth solo, she says that he has met her requirements to be an excellent lover. He's already to go. She tells him to start slowly and then ravish her.
"Now you know you're qualified/You're in the pole position/Put it in first gear, step on the pedal and drive fast."

The bridge is sung again.

The chorus is sung twice, with Stefani adlibbing.
"(I'm ready for you)/Drive back baby to me fast in your car/(Me and you boo)/I'm here waiting, crash into me real hard…Come on baby, please hurry up, you know I'm waiting for you."

The sound of a car engine driving off ends the song.

Sex and driving is a common metaphor. However, Stefani takes the campiness as far as she can go without turning into a parody. Therein, lies its appeal.

Stefani's brassy, beguiling vocals are delightfully whirling and silly. She's having a ball during her break from self-reflection.

The 80s dance-pop arrangement is rich with glittering synths and flamboyant keyboards. It aggressively underscores her craving for him with the same amount of hunger.

"Crash" is a glamorous ode to early 80s synth pop.
