A 'Field Goal' in Basketball?

I personally think that most sports are extremely boring to watch.  I can understand the appeal in playing or watching if you know someone is playing.  I just don't follow pro sports on TV at all.

One term I don't understand at all and am hoping someone can understand is a 3-pt basket being called a field goal in basketball.  What the heck?  Soccer is on a field, football is on a field, basketball is on a....court!  Where on earth does the term come from?

Both the 2 point and 3 point baskets are called field goals.  The ball is shot from the field of play, and if a basket is made, it is a goal.  I do not know the history of th eterm, but it has been around for as long as the game (I think).

Sorry, had to comment. Once a Pat, always a Pat. Even when they suck eggs (which is most of the time).
