Violet
Album: Live Through This
Year: 1995
Courtney Love chides herself for being submissive and inadequate in the raging "Violet."
A cutting guitar opens the single, setting an alienated tone. In the first verse, Love says the evening sky was the color of violet and the stars seemed to swim around like it was an ocean. She tells herself that she has to leave the room before she sees her pretty friend again. Each time her friend sees her, her friend tries to makeover Love. Love despises and says has to not let people take advantage of her.
In the pre-chorus, she screams that people wouldn’t take her defiance seriously. Next day, she would be succumbing to the pressure to be the perfect, friendly girl all over again.
In the chorus, she watches other people get the recongnition and looks they want. However, it means nothing to them. They still find flaws in their appearance, although they look perfect. She’s fed up with their selfishness and vanity. She says they can take every single thing that is worth something. It's not like she had a chance at it anyway.
In the second verse, she says there are things she would like to have: flowing blond hair, to be liked, etc. Her need has become intense within the last few days. People cast her aside and think of her as below them. However, she yells that she has her brains and her sexuality, which are the only two things about herself she likes.
The pre-chorus is sung again.
The chorus is sung again. However, she adds that she would like to see them try to pluck the every last bit of her.
In the final chorus, her parents told her she soon would be comfortable with herself. But she told them she would turn out just like everyone else eventually. She has changed herself entirely to be accepted. She now goes with the fads and checks her mirror regularly. However, she finds her self-esteem is just as low. She wants to be rid of her new image, but doesn’t know how.
Love felt like she could never measure up. Her sullen demeanor turned people off and her questioning nature was put down. Even though she despised the people who made fun of her, she still wished to be them. In order to feel better about herself and please people, she began to conform. Now, she feels like a fraud and as terrible as she did before.
Love's vocals are raw and resentful. She loathes the standards society has and that she has to be a certain person to survive in it. She expertly conveys the venomous, scathing anger in the lyrics. Each yell and shout is a temporary release from the pain she feels.
"Violet" is a biting, excellent track.
