Music Review: Cascada "Everytime We Touch"

Everytime We Touch
Album: Everytime We Touch
Year: 2005

Maggie Reilly, a well-known singer in Europe, first rose to fame in 1979 with her collaborations with Mike Oldfield, according to the allmusicguide. After releasing a solo album in 1984, she left the music industry to have a family. In 1992, she returned to music, releasing the album "Echoes." The lead-off single "Everytime We Touch" performed well on radio and re-established Reilly as a performer.

Maggie Reilly feels a charge within her when her boyfriend embraces her in the poetic "Everytime We Touch."

A restrained electric guitar fades into the song, setting a blissful tone. In the first verse, she says that a brush of her boyfriend's arm upon her own gives her pleasure. It's an instant, chemical reaction she can't stop from feeling. The attraction between them is clear. It's an unknown sensation which she says is a mix of craziness and neverending happiness.
"A shooting star fell down to Earth/Lightning cracked the sky/Something weird is happening/Something I can't deny/A strange kind of magic/Running through my brain/Feel I'm in heaven/Or going insane."

In the chorus, she says the rush happens when they hug or cuddle. Whenever he kisses her, she reaches the clouds and her heart pounds. It's been a few dates but she desperately wants it to work. He has become a necessary part of her life.
"'Cause everytime we touch/I get this feeling/And everytime we kiss/I swear I could fly/Can't you feel my heart beat fast/I want this to last/Need you by my side/'Cause everytime we touch/I feel the static/And everytime we kiss/I reach for the sky/Can't you hear my heart beat so/I can't let you go/Want you in my life."

The restrained electric guitar has a brief solo.

In the second verse, she says the first time they made love it was comparable to an electrical thunderstorm. The passion between them steadily built up and became forceful. Soon, they were kissing and he led her to the bed. There, she has the most powerful orgasm she's ever had.
"The wind was like a hurricane/Storm clouds filled the sky/I heard a crash of thunder/The earth shook in reply/A strange kind of magic/Running through my brain/Feel like I'm in heaven/Or going insane."

The chorus is sung once.

The restrained electric guitar solo has an extended solo.

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

Physical attractions for Reilly have mainly resulted in failed relationships. They never meant much nor did they become anything of substance. It worked for her a while. Then, she discovered how empty it all was. Her new boyfriend excites her in ways no one hasn't. His touch is like a flame that continues to burn. She realizes she would like a relationship with depth and passion. They no longer need to be separate.

Reilly's vocals are crystal clear and angelic. She's earnest and joyful about the love she has.

The comparisons in the single are spot-on. By using nature as a metaphor, she makes the sharp point of how biological relationships are. Relationships, whether short-term or long-term, happen for a scientific reason. Attraction is based on hormones and scent. She will want someone based on it, not because of the stereotypical stuff. However, the chorus is anticlimactic. It switches to simple pop conventions.

The rock-pop arrangement dates it, though. It doesn't quite fit her pure voice nor does it provide the fervent edge the song needs.

"Everytime We Touch" by Reilly is a mismatch of vocals and arrangement. It also lacks consistency.

Cascada, like Maggie Reilly, is much more famous in Europe than in the States. Like DJ Sammy, she is releasing a dance cover of a song to get a quick hit in the States. However, producer DJ Yanou has taken a different approach and had her cover a song that was released in Europe. Currently, Cascada's version of "Everytime We Touch" is #11 on the Billboard Top 100 Chart. It's an accomplishment given the U.S.'s chilly response to dance music.

Cascada is devoted to her boyfriend in the strident "Everytime We Touch."

A long breath and low synths open the single. She immediately starts the first verse, which sets a hasty tone. The first major change is the lyrics. They are rewritten. She says that while she dreams, he talks to her. She also still is able to feel the warmth of his skin. She says she isn't normally so powerless against her own emotions. He comforts her when she is stressed and comes to her aid after a long day at work. He's made her life so much better by being understanding.
"I still hear your voice/When you sleep next to me/I still feel your touch/In my dreams/Forgive me my weakness/ But I don't know why/Without you it's hard to survive."

The lyrics for the chorus are unchanged. Also, a thrashing drum machine accompanies her. In it, she says that she's exhilarated whenever they are affectionate. It's a relationship she believes has a future. There's chemistry between them that can't be ignored.
"'Cause every time we touch...I want you in my life."

A shrill keyboard has a long, ear-splitting solo.

In the second verse, she says she feels at home in his arms. His love for her is unlimited and true. Together, they've been through deaths in the immediate families and the joys of a first, well-paying job. Whenever she's upset, he picks her up.
"Your arms are my castle/Your heart is my sky/They wipe away tears that I've cried/The good and the bad times/We've been through them all/You make me rise when I fall."

The chorus is sung again.

The shrill keyboard has another long solo.

Part of the chorus is sung again to close the single.
"'Cause everytime we touch…I need you by my side."

Unlike Reilly, Cascada and her boyfriend have been together for several years. They are comfortable with each other and know the other by heart. His touch is as satisfying to her as it was when they first met.

Producer DJ Yanou (also of DJ Sammy's "Heaven” and "Boys Of Summer" fame) almost gets the cover right. First, it was an imperfect song which made it ripe for improvement. The Reilly version had hints that it would work as a dance song like the glossy chorus and its mid-tempo pace. Secondly, the overhaul of the verses was needed. The poetic lyrics suited Reilly. However, given Cascada's green, watery vocals, it would've made the lyrics ridiculous.

Yanou, however, has an irksome arrangement that is straight out of Eurovision 1995. The keyboards are fuzzy and constrict the beat. The violent drum machine fillets the beat before its even heard. Both instruments overpower the vocals and nearly drown it out.

Cascada's cover of "Everytime We Touch" had much promise. However, it was squandered on an unfashionable dance style.
