Never Had A Dream Come True
Album: 7
Year: 2000

Jo O'Meara laments a breakup with her last ex-boyfriend in the downcast ballad "Never Had A Dream Come True."

A pondering piano opens the single, setting a somber tone. In the first verse, O'Meara says people have to part with something or someone – whether it's a house, the family pet, or parent. For her, it's an ex-boyfriend she took granted. Each day, she finds herself thinking how much he meant to her and the foolishness of her decision to leave him. She can't change the situation. Dwelling on the what-ifs isn'tgoing to help her any. She's struggling to get over him.
"Everybody's got something they had to leave behind/One regret from yesterday that just seems to grow with time/There's no use looking back or wondering/How it could be now or might have been/Oh this I know but still I can't find ways to let you go."

In the chorus, she says that her ex-boyfriend had every quality she wanted. Whenever she sees him, she smiles and engages in small talk. However, tears roll down her cheeks once he is out of sight. When they were together, she couldn't tell him that he was important to her. She says that even if she moves to another country or has a family, she will have a piece of heart still for him.
"I've never had a dream come true/Till the day that I found you/Even though I pretend that I've moved on/You'll always be my baby/I never found the words to say/You're the one I think about each day/And I know no matter where life takes me to/A part of me will always be with you."

In the second verse, she says that she's living in the past. She thinks of their good times together and the intimate conversations they had.
"Somewhere in my memory/I've lost all sense of time/And tomorrow can never be ‘cause yesterday is all that fills my mind//There's no use looking back or wondering/How it should be now or might have been/Oh this I know but still I can't find ways to let you go."

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, she says no guy will ever compare to him. He's her true love. She didn't realize it then, but she knows now that love is peculiar. She will never be able to get past losing him.
"You'll always be the dream that fills my head/Yes you will, say you will, you know you will/Oh baby, you'll always be the one I know I'll never forget/There's no use looking back or wondering/Because love is a strange and funny thing/No matter how I try and try I just can't say goodbye/No no no no."

The chorus is sung again to end the single.
"I've never had a dream come true… I never found the words to say (words to say)…A part of me will always be/A part of me will always be with you."

While she was dating her former boyfriend, she thought it was for fun. She didn’t take the relationship seriously. After all, it was only a couple months. She had gotten bored and scared. She didn't want to be tied down. Now that she's alone, she realizes she needed his companionship. He gave her so much and she didn't even care. She let him get away and she will forever be kicking herself for it.

O'Meara's heartbroken, longing vocals raise the song from teenybopper to a mature, adult ballad. She owns up to her mistakes and realizes she has no one to blame but herself. However, she doesn't pile on the self-pity. Instead, she takes the high road and deals with the reality of it.

The piano arrangement, though pretty as it may be, copies a brief part of the melody from Dru Hill's 1997 single "We’re Not Making Love No More." It may be slowed down but it’s noticeable from the first note. However, it's truly the only flaw.

"Never Had A Dream Come True" is a courtly ballad.
