Music Review: Chris Brown "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)"

Chris Brown

Yo (Excuse Me Miss)
Album: Chris Brown
Year: 2006

Chris Brown practices his pick up lines before hitting on a girl in the dapper "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)."

Slithery keyboards open the single, setting a smarmy tone. Over the keyboards, Brown "whoa's" and "yeah's"

In the first verse, he's talking with his friends about a girl he saw at the dance. She was gorgeous and he didn't recongnize her from any of his classes. He thinks that to get her attention, he should tell her clique of friends he's interested. But he strikes that idea. One of her friends may like him and not relay the message. He decides he should take the gentlemanly approach. First, he thinks of complimenting her smile and dress. However, he tosses out those ideas for being cliché. Then, he runs to catch up to her, still thinking of what to say.
"Yo/Tell me fellas have you seen her? (Seen her)/t was about five minutes ago/When I seen the hottest chick/That a young'n/Never seen before/I said yo/Tell her girls I want to meet her (meet her)/On second thought that ain't the way to go/I got give her game proper/Spit it so she'll get it/There she is I got to stop her/Or should I talk about her smile? (It's been said before)/Or what about her style? (Too obvious)/I'm out of time/She's out the door/I got to go for mine/I think I'll say."

In the chorus, he decides to ask for her name and tell her he's attracted to her. He asks for her a dance and says he would like to talk to her, if she has the time.
"Yo/I don’t know your name but excuse me miss/I saw you from across the room/And I got to admit that you got my attention/You're making me want to say yo/I know you're trying to leave but excuse me miss/I saved the last dance for you/How I love to keep you here with me oh baby."

In the second verse, the girl says she rather not dance. She doesn't know how. He tells her not to be self-concious. They’ll do a grapevine dance instead. According to SlangCity.com, it’s when a person "steps out to the side with their left foot, crosses it behind with the right foot and takes another step out with the left foot and it touches their right foot beside it. The move is reversed and repeated." Best example is Ciara’s "1,2 Step" music video. If she gets uncomfortable, he says they can turn a fast song into a slow one. All she has to do is pull herself closer to him.
"Now shorty grab hold of my hand/And let's pretend the floor is ours/You say you don't really dance/Don't worry about it/We'll just 1,2 step/1,2 step/Now if the music is moving too fast/Grab my hand a little tighter (tighter)/Don't be afraid to move a little closer/Girl, there is something about you that makes me want to say."

The chorus is sung twice.

In the bridge, he says he wants to be with her, even though it may be for a short while. It’s like he had always dreamed meeting his love of his high school life. He loves the setting. He wonders if she will go out with him. Then, the chorus and first verse are abbreviated and combined.
"I want to be where you are/Ain't nothing wrong with dancing/Baby it's so romantic/Baby I can be in your heart/So many things I want to tell you/I think that I should start by saying Yo/I don't know your name but excuse me miss/I saw you from across the room/I got to give her game proper/Spit it so she get it/There she is- I got to stop her/I know your trying to leave but excuse me miss/I saved the last dance for you/How I love to keep you here with me oh baby."

In the spoken section, he asks people listening to the song to clap along to it. Then, he tells the guys to slow dance with their girlfriends and let them know how much they mean to them. He also wants the guys to say they will do anything for their girlfriends.
"Now everbody just clap your hands like this(like this)/Just clap your hands like this (whoo like this)/And if your shorty in the house tonight/Just grab her by the hand homie/Make her understand y’all was made to dance like this (like this)/Y’all was made to bounce like this (whoa like this)/Just let her know she was made for you/And you want to do everything she want to man."

Brown projects the image that he's smooth with girls. However, he's like the rest of his friends: nervous and awkward. After nixing several ways, he opts to ask for a dance. While dancing with her, he falls for her. It’s the best moment of his adolescence so far and wants everyone to share in it. Suddenly, he gets couples and why relationships are kinda cool. However, he still hasn't matured much: he still only likes her for her physical looks. He also doesn't get he may be pushing a bit hard and scaring her off.

His vocals are gooey and young. He manages to take the aggressiveness out of the lyrics (getting the girl to dance even though she doesn’t want to) and make them teasing. He’s only able to handle teenage material, though, given his boyishness. Anything beyond school dances and first kisses would be ridiculous for him to sing.

The music standard is bubblegum R&B. It has a clean beat, although it's comparable to elevator music.

"Yo (Excuse Me Miss)" is clutter and undistinguishable from the other R&B songs on the radio.
