Turn To You
Album: Talk Show
Year: 1984
Belinda Carlisle pleads with her distant boyfriend to let her lend support in the striving "Turn To You."
Pushy guitars open the single, setting an aggressive tone. In the first verse, Carlisle says he may try to hide from her with his bad boy image. However, she tells him she sees through it. He believes love is something that will destroy them both. Neither will have an identity anymore. The relationship will loom over them and weigh them down. She says he doesn't let anyone in. As a result, he's lonely and doesn't talk to anyone about his life. She tells him that he has a tender heart, even though he claims he's a roughneck.
In the chorus, she tells he has a reason for being afraid of love. She tells him the world outside doesn't matter to her. She wants to talk to him about everything: hopes, aspirations, gripes, etc. They both could use the friendship and love a relationship could bring.
In the second verse, she said when they met a friend's party there was a spark in his eyes. He didn't talk much. However, he was able to express his emotions with his eyes. She says she has to get through to him. Otherwise, the relationship will be a waste and it will end.
In the second chorus, she says she can't pinpoint why the relationship is important to her.
The latter half of the second verse is sung.

"“You act so tough/But I know what you're doing/You think falling in love/Means falling to ruin/You build your walls so high/You act your life out all alone/You don't want to let me see/That your heart's not made out of stone."
In the chorus, she tells he has a reason for being afraid of love. She tells him the world outside doesn't matter to her. She wants to talk to him about everything: hopes, aspirations, gripes, etc. They both could use the friendship and love a relationship could bring.
"There may be some explanation/Why you feel the way you do/The world makes its rotations/But I just want to turn to you (turn to you)/Come on let me turn to you (turn to you)/Please let me turn to you (turn to you)/Why not let me turn to you (turn to you)/Just want to turn to you (turn to you)."
In the second verse, she said when they met a friend's party there was a spark in his eyes. He didn't talk much. However, he was able to express his emotions with his eyes. She says she has to get through to him. Otherwise, the relationship will be a waste and it will end.
"It has a lot to do/With the first time that we met/The wild dance in your eyes/Made up for what was never said/Gotta get my message/Stop spending all our precious time/Because before you know it/We'll be down to our last dime."
In the second chorus, she says she can't pinpoint why the relationship is important to her.
"There are no explanations/Why I feel the way I do…just let me turn to you (turn to you)."
The latter half of the second verse is sung.
"Gotta get my message…we’ll be down to our last dime."
The second chorus is sung again to end the single.
Carlisle would like the chance to get to know him. But he's intent on shutting her out. She believes something may have happened in the past for him to be scared, like his parents divorced or he was abused. She would like to show him that love isn’t toxic. She's never been motivated to have a specific someone in her life. However, she feels it will be worth it.
Carlisle's vocals are unwavering and burning. She's determined to having him listen to her thoughts and be her friend.
The guitars are aggressive, underlying Carlisle's frustration and need.
"Turn To You" is a fantastic track from an underrated 80s album.
