Baby
Album: Ashanti
Year: 2002
Ashanti's new boyfriend is her reason for living in the pointless "Baby."
A tapping piano opens the song, setting a dense tone. In the spoken intro, Ashanti says this is the first serious relationship she's ever had. She's in love with him.
In the first verse, she says that she's wanting her boyfriend. She couldn't exist without him. If he dumped her, she would cling to his pant leg and shriek at him until he agreed to stay. She says he complements her. He's the only guy to consume her.
In the chorus, she calls him "baby" over and over. Whenever she comes across her boyfriends' first name in a magazine or on television, she goes into a trance where she repeats "baby"repeatedly.
In the second verse, she says he makes her feel complete. She would live in on the street with him, if it ever got to that point. When she looks into his eyes, she can't think. She focuses on him. His kisses and affection excite her. She finally understands the concept of true love.
In the pre-chorus, she adds "cause you're my."
The chorus is sung again.
In the third verse, she says she didn't know what her purpose was on earth. However, she realizes it's to love him. She is aware that she's quite psychotic when it comes to him. She says her love for him will never change.
In the fourth verse, she says that when her world is turned upside down, it's him who calms her down. He talks it through with her. He's connected to her and without him, she wouldn't have any will to live.
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.
In the outro, she says "baby" 45 times. It's a record (unofficially).
Ashanti has found the love of her life. She's also hell bent on ridding herself of any personality, life, or dreams she had before she meeting him. It's him and only him. She identifies herself as his girlfriend and acknowledges that it'sher role now in life. It's shuddersome and pathetic that she thinks a man is answer to all her problems.
Her enuciation is poor. A word like bones is dragged out, with emphasis on the "bo" part of the word. She may be aiming for street cred. However, it causes to sound unprofessional and amateurish instead. During the chorus, she repeats the word “"baby" repeatedly as though she's bored of it. She's not even interested in the notes she's trying to reach.
The songwriting is terrible. Cliches are used. She resorts to 1950s ideals, in turn, making herself irrelevant in her own song. It doesn't say anything new at all. It sticks to the standard formula of a R&B single.
"Baby" is a flat mess.

"I don't remember feelin' like this/Baby, baby, I love you/Baby, baby, I love you."
In the first verse, she says that she's wanting her boyfriend. She couldn't exist without him. If he dumped her, she would cling to his pant leg and shriek at him until he agreed to stay. She says he complements her. He's the only guy to consume her.
"I got this Jones formin' in my bones (from a man)/Who indeed took over my soul, (understand)/I couldn't breathe if he ever said (he would leave)/Get on my knees, 'till they bloody red (baby please)/See, I don't know if you get it yet, (just don't know)/He's like the lighter to my cigarette (watch me smoke)/I never knew another human life (didn't know)/Can have the power to take over mine, so baby, baby."
In the chorus, she calls him "baby" over and over. Whenever she comes across her boyfriends' first name in a magazine or on television, she goes into a trance where she repeats "baby"repeatedly.
"Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby (baby, I love you)/Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby/I love it when I hear ya name, got me sayin'/Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby (baby, I love you)/Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby."
In the second verse, she says he makes her feel complete. She would live in on the street with him, if it ever got to that point. When she looks into his eyes, she can't think. She focuses on him. His kisses and affection excite her. She finally understands the concept of true love.
"See, I could never feel alone with you (in my life)/I'll give up everything I own for you (won't think twice)/Almost a shame how I'm mesmerized (such a shame)/I lose my thought lookin' in your eyes (I know why)/Because your kisses make my lips quiver (ooh-ooh-oooh-and that's real)/And when you touch me my whole body shivers(oooh-oooh-oooh-I can feel)/Now, I can see how another life ('nother life)/Can have the power to take over mine."
In the pre-chorus, she adds "cause you're my."

"Break it down/Baby, I can't see my worth (I can't see)/Living here on God's green earth (God's)/You don't know what you've done to me (done to me)/I never thought I'd need you desperately (desperately)/It's kind of sick how I'm stuck on you (stuck on you)/But I don't care cause I'm needin' you (I'm needin' you)/And how I feel will remain the same (remains the same)/'Cause you're my baby ('cause you're my baby)."
In the fourth verse, she says that when her world is turned upside down, it's him who calms her down. He talks it through with her. He's connected to her and without him, she wouldn't have any will to live.
"Listen, and when the world starts to stress me out (where I run)/It's to you boy without a doubt (you're the one)/Who keeps me sane and I can't complain (can't complain)/You're like a drug you relieve my pain (may seem strange)/You're like the blood flowin' through my veins (ooh-ooh-ooooh)/Keeps me alive and feedin' my brain (oooh-oooh-ooooh-ooooh)/Now this is how another human life ('nother life)/Could have the power to take over mine."
