Commitment
Album: Sittin’ On Top Of The World
Year: 1998
LeAnn Rimes yearns for a long-term relationship in the decisive "Commitment."
Knowing guitars open the single, setting a determined tone. In the first verse, she says that she wants an eternal love. She would like a lover who will understand her. She's eager for a guy who shares her values and beliefs. She wants a guy who will think she's beautiful, despite her flaws and make love to her. Also, he would stand up for her and love her for her personality.
In the chorus, she says she wants a lover who's in it for marriage. She's tired of flings that last a few weeks then quickly end. She wants butterflies, emotional support, and friendship that a relationship entails. She adds would like a guy who's loyal and chivalrous.
In the second verse, she says her perfect man will help her through her horrible periods in life and be a ravenous lover. She's not going to date a guy she can't muster feelings for in the meantime. She wants a lover who will be her husband until death do they part.
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she says she's had men tell her that the relationship would lead to marriage early on. Then it would fizzle out. But most of her relationships ended up not being serious. None of the men ever said "I love you" to her or indicated they wanted to be exclusive. She's accepted a couple dates from guys who didn't meet her standards. However, she resolves to stick to her plan.
The chorus is sung once.
A staunch electric guitar has a solo.
The chorus is sung again.
The electric guitar ends the single.
Rimes is like a lot twentysomething women. She had the steady boyfriend in high school. However, in retrospect that relationship was a joke. Since then, she's dated some men in some from the dorm and where she worked. But they were immature. They were interested in only sex. She’s grown tired of the disappointment and the drama. She wants a real relationship. She's also not going to back down, either. It's all or nothing.
Rimes' vocals are superb as usual. Her naturally commanding voice propels the single. Despite being 16 (when she recorded the single), she is able to handle the mature subject matter with grace.
"Commitment" is a relatable song that stands out due to her powerhouse voice.

"What I'm lookin' for/Is a love that's forever/Someone who can capture my soul in a heartbeat/And stay for all time/What I'm prayin' for/Is a match made in heaven/Someone who will worship my body/And still put his heart on the line."

"Commitment/Someone who'll go the distance/I need somebody with staying power/Who will make me go weak in the knees/Commitment/And everything that goes with it/I need honor and love in my life from somebody/Who's playin' for keeps."
In the second verse, she says her perfect man will help her through her horrible periods in life and be a ravenous lover. She's not going to date a guy she can't muster feelings for in the meantime. She wants a lover who will be her husband until death do they part.
"I need honor and love in my life from somebody/Who's playin' for keeps/What I'm searching for/Is a man who'll stand by me/Who will walk through the fire/And be my flame in the night/I won't settle for/Less than what I deserve/A friend and a lover who'll love me/For the rest of my life."

"Yeah I've had promises broken/Three words left unspoken/They just left me achin' for more/
But I've found temptation/I won't be impatient/There's one thing that's worth waitin' for."
