Music Review: Pussycat Dolls "Beep"

Pussycat Dolls

Beep
Album: PCD
Year: 2006

Nicole Kea dismisses men who like her for her breasts in the obnoxious “Beep.”

An orchestral sample from ELO’s “Evil Woman” opens the single, setting a familiar tone. Kea and the dolls say “ha ha-ha” several times.
“Ha, ha-ha, ha-ha/Ha, ha-ha, ha/Ha-ha, ha-ha, ha-ha/Ha, ha-ha, ha.”

Black Eyed Peas member Will.I.Am begins the chorus. He says the men think about sex all the time. He adds that despite her kind personality and intelligence, he’s still thinks of her as a piece of ass. He says there’s nothing wrong with ogling her. A beep is heard replacing the swear word. Kea says that could care less and he can ogle. However, it’s not going to get him anywhere.
“It's funny how a man only thinks about the.../You got a real big heart, but I'm looking your.../You got real big brains, but I'm looking at your.../Girl, there ain't no pain in me looking at your.../I don't give a.../Keep looking at my…/'Cause it don't mean a thing if you're looking at my.../I'm a do my thing while you're playing with your.../Ha, ha-ha, ha-ha, ha-ha.”

The ELO sample is heard again.

In the first verse, Kea mentions that guys have been after her body since the middle school. They ask her over their house to study and then try to make out with her. They want to touch her breasts and have sex with her. She tells them no every time. However, they won’t leave alone.
“Every boy's the same/Since I been in the seventh grade/
They been trying to get with me/Trying to (Ha, ha-ha, ha, ha-ha)/They always got a plan/To be my one and only man/Want to hold me with their hands/Want to (Ha, ha-ha, ha, ha-ha)/I keep turning them down/But, they always come around/Asking me to go around/That's not the way it's going down.”

In the pre-chorus, Kea says they just want to sleep with her.
“'Cause they only want/Only want my ha, ha-ha/Ha, ha-ha/Only want what they want/But, na, ah-ah/Na, ah-ah.”

The chorus is sung again.

In the second verse, she says she’s had to fend off from a couple sexual assaults. She tells the guys to she’s not ready to have sex with them on the first date. She also says they should back off and not force it. She says she knows about guys like them. It’s not something she wants to talk about.
“Do you know that no/Don't mean yes, it means no/So just hold up, wait a minute/Let me put my two cents in it/One, just be patient/Don't be rushing/Like you're anxious/And two, you're just too aggressive/
So try to get your (Ahh)/Do you know that I know?/And I don't want to go there.”

The pre-chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, Will.I.Am says “boomp boomp” several times over the ELO sample. Kea mentions the current guy who likes her. He’s been hitting on her for weeks and scheming for her to come over his house. Kea says she doesn’t want to sleep with him.
“Ooh, you've got it bad I can tell/You want it bad, but oh well/Dude, what you got for me/Is something I/
Something I don't need/Oh!”

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

Kea likes the control of refusing a date. Her sexuality and well-endowed breasts has given her much attention from men over the years. However, she learned early on to not trust men and defend herself from rape. She masks her cynicism with haughtiness. In the end, she’s not empowered, but traumatized and angry. She dislikes being pretty and would do anything to lose her looks.

Will.I.Am is the jerk she’s been confronted with all her life. His raps are shallow and condescending. He’s not interested in a relationship with her. For him, women are sexual objects which serve to please him.

Currently, R&B and rap performers say whatever they want, regardless of its vulgarity. For the Pussycat Dolls to censor themselves with the beeping sound is ridiculous and immature. It’s meant to sound controversial. However, the words they are covering up have been said countless times.

“Beep” is a lame attempt for street cred.
