Keep Fishin'
Album: Maladroit
Year: 2002
Rivers Cuomo mopes as he best girl friend dates a jerk in the chapfallen "Keep Fishin'."
Laid back guitars open the single, setting a casual tone. In the first verse, Cuomo tells her she needs to forget the drama she's involved in and find a guy who is right for her.
In the chorus, he says he broods and cries all day. He can't handle that she has feelings for another guy. She's a shadow of herself, straining to get her boyfriend's attention.
In the second verse, he says that she has to stop living her life for her boyfriend. She should move to New York like she's always dreamed and work.
A short, poppy guitar solo follows.
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, he says that he loves her. She has to continue searching for what she wants and not settle for the first guy she meets. She's going to self-destruct if she stays with him any longer.
The chorus is sung again.
The bridge is sung again.
At the end, he repeats the first lyric again.
Cuomo wants to rescue her. But he knows it will be useless. She won't listen to him anyway. He's known her for a long time. She's a determined, stubborn person. Once her mind is made up, it's going to happen that way.
However, Cuomo may be concerned, he doesn't show it. His vocals are indifferent and pouty. He's interested in wallowing and whining about his lovelife.
The arrangement of chugging guitars alongside a winsome chorus has become formulaic for the band.
"Keep Fishin'" is a self-indulgent and grating tune.
