I Want You
Album: Strange Behaviour
Year: 1986
Astrid Plane is consumed by her boyfriend in the frisky "I Want You."
Coy guitars open the single, setting an impetuous tone. In the first verse, Plane explains that she has tried many ways to distract herself from thinking about her boyfriend. However, she can focus solely on him. Lust is controlling her.
In the pre-chorus, she says she is obsessed with him. She's losing her identity and can't feel for herself.
In the chorus, she says that with every glance and whisper he makes, it makes her aware of how much she desires him.
In the second verse, she say that with each thought of him, she becomes vulnerable. She no longer has any hobbies or dreams or hopes. Everything is him. She must be with him.
The pre-chorus is sung again.
The chorus is sung again. However, extra lyrics are added.
In the bridge, she says she's had several relationships that she thought would work out. However, they all ended for different reasons. It caused her to be leery of guys. But she thinks he will be honest.
A juiced up electric guitar has a solo.
The pre-chorus is sung again.
The second chorus is sung twice to end the single.
Yet again, Plane is zeroing on one guy. Nonetheless, he thinks she's a normal girl who loves him. He's unaware of the extent of her emotions. The familiar theme of obsession is one which Animotion relies on to sell music. With each effort, the group's weaknesses show.
The guitar and drum machine arrangements are tame and formulaic. The guitar is nebbish. It never creates an impression. While the drums are relentless in their repetitive tapping. It's obnoxious after a while. However, the electric guitar brings a lot of liveliness to the single. But it can't salvage the song.
Plane's apathetic vocals are devoid of energy and spark. She strains to be flirty. But she conveys it as aloof instead.
"I Want You" lacks excitement and the fire which made their first single interesting.
