Music Review: Divine "One More Try"

Divine

One More Try
Album: Fairy Tales
Year: 1998

Divine plays games with a boyfriend in their guileless cover of "One More Try."

A sharp keyboard and a muted piano open the single, setting a melodramatic tone. Lead singer Nikki Bratcher says she's tired of bad boys and blind dates. She says she's wants a wonderful guy who will make her feel safe. However, she presses him
"I've had enough of danger/And people on the streets/I'm looking out for angels/Just trying to find some peace/Now I think it's time/That you let me know (you let me know)/So if you love me/Say you love me/But if you don't, just let me go."

In the chorus, she says she doesn't want to deal with another painful breakup. Although she wants an answer from him regarding his feelings, she'd rather not reveal any of her emotions. She didn't like being hurt. She would rather not experience those emotions again. She wants a the perfect relationship.
"'Cause teacher/There are things that I don't want to learn (things that I don't want to learn)/And the last one I had/Made me cry/So I don't want to learn to/Hold you, touch you/Think that you're mine/Because it ain't no whirl/For an uptown girl/Whose teacher has told her goodbye, goodbye, goodbye."

In the second verse, she says she flirted with him but think much of it. It was just fun. However, she realizes she's developed feelings for him. She thinks he will reject her. She snaps that he barely knows her and she's been disappointed before. It's awful and she doesn't want to make the same mistake. She tells him to move on.
"When you were just a stranger/And I was at your feet/I didn't feel the danger/Now I feel the heat/That look in your eyes (the look in those lovely eyes)/Is telling me no.So you think that you love me/Know that you need me/I wrote the song, I know it's wrong/Just let me go."

The chorus is sung again.

The shrill keyboard has a solo.

The final chorus is edited and choppy. It takes part from the first chorus and the original second chorus. She says she would like to be single for a while. She admits that she isn't over her last relationship. However, she's going to give him a chance.
"So I don't want to learn to/Hold you, touch you/Think that you're mine/No whirl (no, no, no whirl)/For uptown girl/who just isn't willing to try/I'm so cold (so cold) inside (inside)/Oh, baby, maybe just one more try/Just one more try to ease my mind, I feel so cold inside/Just one more try to ease my mind/, I feel so inside."

Divine's cover of "One More Try" is riddled with problems. First, it's the overall attitude. Bratcher is young woman smarting from being dumped. Unfortunately, it messed her up. She now believes every guy owes her. She has impossible expectations from relationships. She believes it's the guy who should be upfront and reveal all his thoughts. However, she will remain closed off until it's convenient for her.

The music arrangement is also sped up slightly. It cuts the single a minute short. Although subtle, it's manages to make a difference. Without the pauses, the arrangement is pushy and dominating. It's all about Divine.

They trill and melisma their way through, bleeding the song of any emotional power it had. Their young vocals also lack the maturity to convey the anguish which is necessary to the song. The lyrics are taken at face value and intrepreted to be the typical R&B drama: girl got her heart broken by her ex and now all guys are suspect.

Divine's self-absorbed cover brings out the worst in the song.
