Album: Gotta Get Thru This
Year: 2002
Daniel Bedingfield crumbles after a painful breakup in the tedious "Gotta Get Thru This."
An ordinary drum machine and simple synths open the single, setting a moronic tone. Bedingfield then adds "bum, bah-bums" in the background. In the first verse, he is determined to be happy again. He's distressed and unable to do anything. However, he has to move on. He just has to forget his ex-girlfriend.
"If only I could get through this/I get through this/I gotta get through this/I gotta get through this/I gotta make it, gonna make, gonna make it through/I'm gotta get through this/I gotta get through this/I gotta take my, gotta take my mind off you."
In the first verse, he says that he needs a moment to compose himself. If he make it through a minute without crying, he'll consider it a victory. Next, he's going to try a day. However, he knows by the second day he will be wishing he was close to her again.
"Give me just a second and I'll be all right/Surely one more moment couldn't break my heart/Give me 'til tomorrow then I'll be okay/Just another day and then I'll hold you tight."
In the pre-chorus, he imagines her touching his face and giving him a soft smile. However, it's only a fantasy. He wonders if he will ever be able to express his love for again. He likes to think that she's in his life. But each time he passes by her, he thinks of what could've been.
"When your love is pouring like the rain/I close my eyes and it's gone again/When will I get the chance to say I love you/
I pretend that you're already mine/Then my heart ain't breaking every time/I look into your eyes."
The chorus is sung again. However, he asks for God's help.
"If only I could get through this...God, God gotta help me get through this....I gotta take my, gotta take my mind off you."
The first verse is sung again.
The pre-chorus is sung again.
The chorus is sung twice to end the single.
The machoism in "Gotta Get Thru This" is curious, but not surprising. After all, in previous singles he's been possessive and stalkerish. For the single, he manages to blend both qualitites. It's as though he can't stay away from her. He purposely finds reasons to be around her. In some ways, he looks forward to the agony it brings him.
Bedingfield made his vocals nasally and robotic to match the synths. But he comes across as inhuman and troubled.
The synth accompiant is sluggish and dull. It circles the same monotonous, twitchy rhythm over and over.
"Gotta Get Thru This" is a poor attempt at being a song.
