Line Up
Album: Elastica
Year: 1994
Justine Frischmann sees groupies after every show, each one as manufactured as a soup can in the blunt "Line Up."
Sputtering guitars and grunts open the single, setting a knowing tone. In the first verse, she says that groupies have on the latest styles in fashion. Her keys jangle in her Bollywood purse. She gets out her lighter and smokes. She puts on her vacant look and looks for the backstage area to find band members.
She continues to say groupies don't believe in monogamy. They have to have a new conquest every night. Frischmann shakes her head as the groupie goes after the bass player, a moody guy who will chew up her up and spit her out.
In the chorus, she says the groupie is yet another naive girl who thinks her night with a rock star will lead to fame. However, she's quickly forgotten. The men in the band are fickle and change their minds as to who they want. Frischmann notes that if the groupies wouldn't have blown her off, she might've helped them.
The sputtering guitar has a solo.
In the second verse, she says the groupies know everything about the band members. They fawn all over them and treat them like gods. They are as shallow as the lifestyle they wish to aspire to have.
She continues to say that the groupies hanging around the tonight is well-known. The girl has slept with every band member who has reached the Top 40 within the past year. However, she's more likely to remember the size of their genitals, not their faces.
The chorus is sung once more to end the single.
Unlike her male bandmates, Frischmann isn't chased by groupies. Mostly, she finds herself shunted off to the side as her male bandmates leave to have sex with them. For Frischmann, it's an annoyance and to a certain degree, entertainment. She sees the same type of woman show after show. They think they will influence the band or become a part of it. She laughs at their delusions as they ignore her. However, she gets to live the dream they want without having to objectify herself for it.
Frischmann's vocals are spicy and sardonic. She makes fun of the women, calling them drivel heads. To take a guess, it's for drooling all over the band members. They view her as competition, she sees them as clueless and opportunistic.
The arrangement is snappy and whimiscal which complement Frischmann's vocals well. The notes are drenched in sarcasm.
"Line Up" is a shrewd slice of the rock star life.

"Drivel head wears her glad rags/She's got her keys, money and fags/I know that her mind is made up/To get rocked."
She continues to say groupies don't believe in monogamy. They have to have a new conquest every night. Frischmann shakes her head as the groupie goes after the bass player, a moody guy who will chew up her up and spit her out.
"Drivel head needs a new man/As only a drivel head can/
He's a hormonal nightmare/So beware."

"Another victim of line up in line/Line up in line is all I remember/Oh how their favours change/You could have been kinder/Yes, yes, line up in line/Line up in line is all I remember/Oh how their favours change/You could have been mine."

"Drivel head knows all the stars/Loves to suck their shining guitars/They've all been right up her stairs/Do you care?/(No)."
She continues to say that the groupies hanging around the tonight is well-known. The girl has slept with every band member who has reached the Top 40 within the past year. However, she's more likely to remember the size of their genitals, not their faces.
"Drivel head knows all the bands/Knows them like the back of her hands/You can't see the wood for the trees/On your knees."
