I Wanna Have Some Fun
Album: I Wanna Have Some Fun
Year: 1988
Samantha Fox defies her possessive boyfriend and goes clubbing in the ornery "I Wanna Have Some Fun."
Over low-grade keyboard beats, a member of Full Force intros the song by saying Samantha Fox's name. It sets a run-of-the-mill tone.
In the first verse, she always asks her boyfriend to go dancing with her. Each time, he responds with "no." He says that she will cheat on him and he doesn't trust her nor the guys at the club. She complains that she's bored. She whines that he wishes he was as beautiful as her.
She continues to say that there's a double standard in their relationship. She lets him go out with his friends or by himself. However, she gets the third degree from him. She says she cares about him. However, she's not going to listen to him tonight.
In the chorus, she says she's going to enjoy herself and dance all night.
A female background singer says she's been looking forward to going out with Fox all day.
Alison Moyet's laugh from Yaz's "Situation" follows.
In the second verse, Fox says she works full-time throughout the week. She says it's necessary for her to relax. Working all the time isn't healthy. She decides to call her friends. She says again that she cares about him. However, she's a bad girl and references her hit "Naughty Girls Need Love Too." She wonders if he's hiding an affair from her and she's not paying attention to the signs. She doesn't believe his excuses and heads off
In the second chorus, she says she deserves a night out after working at her job.
The first chorus is sung again.
In the spoken part of the bridge, she says dancing with her girlfriends is something she must do. She wants to dress up in some of her flimsiest clothes and party.
She continues to say that she feels trapped. He's not allowing her any space. She's not afraid of him yelling at her anymore. She's going to ignore him when he asks her to stay home.
In the third chorus, Fox says she wants to have fun.
A siren goes off, signaling the party is in full swing.
Then, Fox sings the second chorus and the first chorus to end the single.
Fox is in an unhealthy relationship. She suspects that he is cheating on her. But she's gotten the point, she really doesn't care. He's held her back long enough. She wants to live life like he gets to. She resolves to go out with her frieds every chance she gets.
Samantha Fox shows minimal improvement with producers Full Force. They manage to keep her ego and overt sexuality in check. She's toned down a bit and it makes a difference. She's far more tolerable.
However, Fox's cocky vocals drain the song of any goodwill. It's like everything is a joke to her. Instead of being easygoing, she's callow and mocking. She and her boyfriend deserve each other. They are both making the other miserable. It's a relationship in name only.
The keyboard arrangement is not as strong as it is for the Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam songs. It lacks the punch and harmony that propel the songs. Full Force aim for passable and nothing more.
"I Wanna Have Some Fun" is like an overhyped party. It's missing the extra something which would make it stand out.

"Working 9 to 5 each and every day/What your momma used to say, all work, no play/I know what to do, I think I'll call my crew/Of course, I love you, but naughty girls need fun too/Could it be that I make you feel guilty why/Is there something I can't see, no/I just don't buy it, so don't even try it/I've got to go in the place to be."
In the second chorus, she says she deserves a night out after working at her job.
"I wanna have some fun (I wanna have some fun)/Move my body all night long (Move my body all night long)/Working hard every day (Working hard every day)/So I ain't staying home no way (So I ain't staying home no way)."
