Doctor! Doctor!
Album: Into The Gap
Year: 1984

Tom Bailey is puzzled by his dizzyness in the awestruck ballad "Doctor! Doctor!"

Ardent keyboards open the single, setting an amazed tone. In the first verse, he said he saw his girlfriend standing by herself, observing the room. He thought she was beautiful. He was stunned, thinking she was a mirage. He decides to be bold and kisses her. He whispers to her, asking if she would like to dance. She nods yes. They talked all night, sharing their dreams and wishes. For him, he felt as though his dreams were closer to coming true.
"I saw you there, just standing there/And I thought I was only dreaming yeah/I kissed you then, then once again/You said you would come and dance with me/Dance with me across the sea/And we could feel the motion of a thousand dreams."

In the chorus, he notices he feels faint afterwards. He can't eat or sleep. He consults a doctor, asking him to confirm what he believes his lightheadness really is.
"Oh, doctor, doctor, can't you see I'm burning, burning/Oh, doctor, doctor, is this love I'm feeling?"

In the second verse, he says they watched the ships sail across the sea. They both were imagining where the ships were taking people and what their lives were like. As the sky became a hazy blue, the party began to end. People were saying goodbye. She told him she had to go home. However, he begs her to stay a little while longer. He no longer wants to alone.
"Ships at night give such delight/We all leave before the morning light/Please don't go no please don't go'Cause I don't want to stay here on my own."

The chorus is sung twice.

In the bridge, he says he's willing to let love consume him. He surrenders to his emotions, knowing he can't deny them anymore.
"Fever breathe your love on me (breathe your love)/Take away my name (take away)/Fever lay your hands on me (breathe your love)/Never be the same."

The chorus is sung twice.

In the half verse, he asks her to join him. Together, they will plan their future.
"Come with me and make believe/We can travel to eternity."

In the single, Bailey is not the type of guy to fall in love immediately. He's had standard crushes and dates. However, it was casual and fun. Love didn't exist. It was an idea. But when he met the woman at the party, he's in love. He's not aware that he is at first. Then, the next morning, he has an incredible rush. He thinks it's love, which is uncharacteristic of him. He goes the doctor, hoping that he would say the same thing. For the first time, he wants to be in love.

Bailey's vocals are tender and fond. He cherishes her and unlike any girl he's ever known.

The keyboard arrangement heightens his vocals. They add a sense of urgency and romanticism.

"Doctor! Doctor!" is a lovely ballad devoid of the usual cliches.
