Music Review: Weezer "Hash Pipe"

Hash Pipe
Album: Weezer (Green Album)
Year: 2001

Rivers Cuomo tells a story about a transvetite prostitute in the off-center "Hash Pipe."

A high strung guitar opens the single, setting an unhinged tone. Cuomo says he is unable control his love for men. He can't deny them, even though he has tried. He says men pick him up on the street because they need to have a fix. For a brief moment, guys like him. If he can't find a guy to pick him up, he will think about what he's doing. He prefers to shove the idea far back into his mind. He lives and works in Santa Monica on a corner that is well-known for prostitutes.
"I can't help my feelings, I'll go out of my mind/These players come to get me 'cause they'd like my behind/I can't love my business if I can't get a trick/Down on Santa Monica where tricks are for kids."

In the chorus, a man is getting violent with him. He's caught on to the fact that Cuomo is not a woman after all. Cuomo invites him to slap just once. He tells the guy he's not perfect, either. Cuomo say that he has a nice, plump butt. The guy has his money, which he can use to not pay him. Either way, he has a home to go back to. However, Cuomo's weapon is a hash pipe, which is his source of power.
"Oh, come on and kick me/Oh, come on and kick me/Come on and kick me/You've got your problems/I've got my ass wide/You've got your big G's/I've got my hash pipe."

The high strung guitar has a luscious solo.

In the second verse, he says he performs on the street to catch men's eyes. The guy he picked up isn't responding and continues to drive. Cuomo wanted someone to at least know a little something about him. It's the closest he has to a relationship. Cuomo tells the customer that his thighs are appetizing.
"I can't help my boogies they get out of control/I know that you don't care but I want you to know/The knee-stocking flavor is a favorite treat/Of men that don't bother with the taste of a teat."

The chorus is sung twice.

The guitar plays a instrumentation of the verse.

The chorus is sung again.

Cuomo says that he has his weapon three times to end the single.
"I've got my hash pipe/I've got my hash pipe/I've got my hash pipe."

"Hash Pipe," surprisingly, isn't about smoking a ton of drugs (as the title would suggest.) Instead, it's about self-preservation. Likely, he's been kicked out of his house. His family that can't accept his sexual orientation. He didn't have any friends. They thought he was weird and made fun of him. The seedy streets of Santa Monica is all he has.

His tricks validate him. He feels attractive and wanted. However, he is a defensive and angry person. His hash pipe gives him a sense of power and control. He doesn't care about anything else, just the pipe. By this point, it's the only possession he has.

The threatening guitar solos are fantastic. The riff makes the song.

Cuomo's insecure yet antagnostic vocals help to make the character human.

"Hash Pipe" is another brilliant single by Weezer.
