Music Review: Robbie Williams "Rock DJ"

Robbie Williams

Rock DJ
Album: Sing When You're Winning
Year: 2000

Robbie Williams relishes the role of being a pop star in the fantablous "Rock DJ."

Bouncy keyboards open the single, setting a festive tone. Williams says he's a part of the club's entertainment for the night. Ladies around him doing high kicks. Mid-turn, he notices men smoking marijuana and women popping pills. He asks the women to show their hands if don't have dates. He then asks if he can start the fun. Cheeky female background singers say it's all right. He tries to get the crowd to sing along with him. He starts by saying that he has something, to which the crowd answers with "funk." He says they have, to which a low voice says "soul." He says everyone is in the room. He was born charismatic. He's going to make it the best show ever. The crowd is going to be on their feet all night.
"Me with the floorshow/Kickin' with your torso/Boys getting high/And the girls even more so/Wave your hands if your not with a man/Can I kick it? (Yes you can)/I got (Funk)/You got (Soul)/We got everybody/I've got the gift/Gonna stick it in the goal/It's time to move your body."

In the bridge, he gives a shout out to Babylon, saying that it's making a comeback. He asks if the crowd is willing to along with that. He says he's already taken off and is in space. However, he's dancing so hard, he needs to let the people know he's not going to kill them.
"Babylon back in business/Can I get a witness?/Every girl, every man/Houston, do you hear me?/Ground control, can you feel me?/Need permission to land."

In the chorus, he says that he can't help being so entertaining. He's wired and wonders if the adernaline rush will ever end.
"I don't wanna rock, DJ/But your making me feel so nice/When's it gonna stop, DJ?/'Cause you're keepin' me up all night."

In the second verse, he says his songs are heard in school talent shows and over the radio. He advises groupies that if they don't him oral sex, they can't get backstage. He says they be total fangirls. He'll be a gentleman. However, once he's on stage, he's a raunchy, bad boy. He tells the girls that if they aren't getting any affection from their boyfriends, they need to dump them. And dance! He tells guys that if their best friends have girlfriends but they don't, they have to dance!
"Singin' in the classes/Music for your masses/Give no head/No backstage passes/Have a proper giggle/I'll be quite polite/But when I rock the mic/I rock the mic (Right)/You got no love, then you're with the wrong man/It's time to move your body/
If you can't get a girl/But your best friend can/It's time to move your body."

In the pre-chorus, he wants a girl he can ogle. He's not intending to be a family man.
"I don't wanna be sleazy/Baby just tease me/Got no family planned/Houston, do you hear me?/Ground control, can you feel me?/Need permission to land."

The chorus is sung twice.

In the bridge, he says that being a product has its negatives. He usually gets scammed out of money. However, there's nothing wrong with being a heartthrob.
"Pimpin' ain't easy/Most of them fleece me/Every night/Pimpin' ain't easy/But if you're sellin' it/It's alright."

After the beat bounces back and forth, Williams says "come on."

The chorus is sung twice. An electric guitar is added as the chorus is sung several more times.

Williams doesn't take himself seriously. He's there to entertain and titillate. He takes his image (which is a bad boy) and skewers it. He embellishes the role. He will sleep with every woman in the room instead of the few he's been rumored to have. He says that not only is popular throughout Europe, but in outer space as well. He unabashadly loves the sound of his own voice. It's meant to be ridiculous and over-the-top, which is its charm.

Williams' vocals are laced with irony. He's a charismatic singer who turn his attutide by the next note. In the verses, he's nonchalant about his fame. But by the pre-chorus, he's lusty and cocky. When he's singing in the chorus, he's jubilant.

"Rock DJ" is pure camp and unadulterated fun.
