New Barren class world are..well, like Ceti Alpha V.  Not pleasant but survivable.

 

Metal class worlds are cool if you can survive lightning strikes.

 

Reduction worlds are well beyond our technology right now to land on.  Which is a shame because they're so rich...

It's a busy galaxy.

Unlike in say Galactic Civilizations or Sins of a Solar Empire, you are in command of a single ship.  You can send in reports back to Earth and any allies you make and they may do various things that change the fate of the galaxy, but this is the story of your ship and your crew.
