Here is the map of Elemental (map made for Random House’s Elemental: Destiny's Embers novel).
A cloth map (made of canvas specifically) will be included in the Limited Edition.
To give a mental picture, From Washington State to Florida is about 2,800 miles.
Also - Can we get a super high resolution version of that map? It'd be fun for D&D purposes.
Um... that map looks extremely similar to Arda... even the mountain ranges are nearly the same.
As to the size of Elemental's world... it's actually quite similar to the size of the "known world" of the time of Alexander the Great. Which is just perfect, IMO.
Hammerfell... What about Hammertime?!
I might be over analyzing this but Lake Gandru doesn't seem that realistic. It has two rivers leaving it both of which go to the sea and on opposite sides of the continent. Water flows down hill and takes the first available opening so which ever river exit was lower would take precedent except maybe in times of heavy rains when the lake rises enough to poor into the 2nd river.
I'm not that familiar with every lake/river in the world but I don't know of any cases of this happening naturally. I say naturally because humans have dug canals to link of several lakes and rivers to create shipping lanes, and those don't really count.
Other wise it's a nice map though.
Well, I'll join you in the overthinking but point out that lake Gandru is east of the Imperial Spine. Therefore, you have a single source in the mountains that flows both east and west and both downhill, and one side feeds into lake Gandru while the other flows directly to the ocean.
Your sense of reality can be restored
maps are close but not that close
the idea of two connected continents is not that unique...
Two connected continents isn't unique, but the mountain ranges are largely the same, the shape of the continents is largely the same, they even have an island between them in exactly the same position. This really jumped out at me, to the point at which I thought this was a map of Arda until I read the place-names and realized it was different.
I don't see the extreme similarity that you see. There's the general similarity of two larger landmasses connected by a land bridge, but the mountain lines are significantly different. For instance, Arda's western mass is nearly completely boxed in with mountains on the edges.
Dave Stern at Random House came up with a lot of it.
I have had a sketch of the general map since back in the early 90s along with a handful of the key places (Altar, The Henge, Magnar, Umber) and from there, Dave and I collaborated on expanding the mythology and the world.
It's actually not that big. This continent (Anthys) is actually only one of many continents which hopefully we'll be able to expand upon over the next several years.
Considering all the fantastic maps out there, I'm not surprised that its possible to find a similar one. Shoot a lot of arrows, you see one that falls near the bullseye, and go 'aha! see? A veritable copy!' ignoring all the other arrows that are sticking out of the wall that fell well short. Some map had to have two land masses connected by a bridge above an island.

The paraeidolist in me sees a lobster claw grabbing a snack.
So is this the map in which the campaign of Elemental will take place on?
I only see four each, empires and kingdoms. Wasn't there five each?
Good to know I've always been curious where fantasy authors (and sci-fi and anyone who isn't using real places) comes up with names for people, places, etc. It doesn't seem like it would be fun
Ugg, more of the **** from the "lore". I hope this obsession with the selling the book doesn't totally cripple the game. We already lost any chance of decent races because of that.
Looks very nice! I can't wait to play on the huge insane size map of Elemental.
Did they actually decide to cut the races? I don't remember there being a final verdict.
Thank you for this nice map. I'll be sure to steal interesting geographical features for my PnP RPG campaign.
Which reminds me, i'm going to make a map of it in Elemental. And... maybe i'll make a mod based on it too. Maybe. Depends if modding Elemental is easy enough. Plus on bunch of other stuff.
I really like the map. It is interesting. I love maps.
Pre-post EDIT. The frigging forum decided my log in was old enough and logged me out, when i pressed submit. [sarcasm] THANK YOU! [/sarcasm] And thank the being who (no idea where) advised getting Lazarus plugin for Firefox!!!
By chance are you the guy always running around as Drizzt<insert_number> or Legolas<insert_number> on every MMO I play?
But yea, better not let that lore/story stuff ruin a good game, that happens all the time!!!.
Panic!
This map looks to me like Ireland and Alaska connected by a bridge
To me it looks like some of the original maps of East Asia and S. America.
Quoting endofdayz, reply 40Ugg, more of the **** from the "lore". I hope this obsession with the selling the book doesn't totally cripple the game. We already lost any chance of decent races because of that.
The Map shows 8 Races. The game has 10 Races.
How can the Book Lore *** up over the game if we get 2 more Races in the **** game?
Seriously. Are you in need of "Bitch Miles" somewhere else?
We don't offer "Bitch Miles" here thanks.
Wintersong-
Tidal land bridge?
FutileEmotion-
Did anyone else get a sudden urge to use supply depots to block off and siege tank up the Henge?
Gwakamoli-
I don't know about you, but I'm picturing some epic battles over the bridge connecting the 2 land masses if 2 armies reach there at the same time ^^
Fardeil-
Me thinks that it would be rather pointless battles for those who don't bother for soldiers, just a pointless bloodbath
MorganDeWitt-
The Henge looks vitally important, but that's only if the inner coasts of each continent aren't beached up much, I guess.
Actually, it's where my TollBooth is. Payup or turn around. I accept next of kin and Shards as payment on a 1 to 1 basis.
I'm pretty sure there are only 8 factions now, and factions=/=races.
