AOL Saftey and Security Center...The PC Idiots Best Friend

Hello Everyone!

I am just writing to say that I have belonged to AOL for a long time, and the AOL SSC is the best thing that they can possibly do for their users. While I am extremely knowledgable with computers, some of my family isnt . I had NIS 2006, but found it interrupted so much with my online activites that I simply got rid of it. I installed AOL SSC, hoping to find a new alternative to Norton. I figured what the hell, I pay for it anyway! I was shocked at how easy the service was to naivgate, and better yet to use! I have a scan set every day at 4:00PM, and it take only 40 minutes to complete. Instead of having Spyware Doctor and NIS, AOL SSC bundles the antivirus, spyware, and firewall service into one software program. I found that this program is great, and I think even the most experienced user to the most PC illiterate can benefit from AOL's new invention.

All your eggs are in one basket....not a good idea.

The only way to be FAIRLY certain you are catching all the spyware is to have more than one proggy with more than one database/signature set and way of handling.

Easy is only easy.  It is not necessarily better....

as a former AOL person I can say to me AOL, stands for Almost On Line.

LoL..AOL isnt real popular here, there are a few that belong to that uuhhhh...ISP..
But not many that admit to it..LoL..sorry!!

Jafo's right though..dont depend on just one proggie to keep everything "warm & fuzzy" Especially if it has it's roots from AOL...

AOL's programs I personally find very "Annoying" and memory pigs not to mention that they are not at all dependable..Considering that 80% of the AOL program is "Spyware" all by itself..

But if your happy then thats what counts!

AOL security center is Mcafee underneath , use the original its better. Not to be insulting to anyone but knowledgable people don't use AOL , its locked in and so are you !

Anyone had problems with America offline refusing to stop charges after you quit?

I did, so I went around violating many TOS ( remember those? ) so they banned me from aol. I was happy since harges stopped too, which was my goal.

I once set up an account set up for someone on a Corporate Credit Card. (name changed here) The name on the card was XYZ Inc. This was the only name on the card. When I went to cancel it, they would only speak to the person whose name was on the card. I explained it was a corporate card and that the name was XYZ Inc. They repeated their stance... would only speak with the person whos name was on the card. I said, How shall I hand the phone to XYZ Inc when they are not a person. Once again they repeated their stance. What IDIOTS they are. We had to cancel the Corporate Credit Card to avoid the recurring charges.
I feel sorry for anyone that has fell prey to the AOL lies and experiences..

I did as well..but billing me was all they were able to do..(a couple friends after they shut down AOL actually continued to be charged!)..I had set up a bank account specifically for "AOL" and when I was "done" with them..I "cancelled" the service, closed the bank account and that was it...well except for the fact AOL did not shut the account off for 6 months!! and tried to say I "owed" them for that time...

They screwed up my credit score pretty bad, luckily I usually pay in cash and in full for almost everything I purchase, but it still sucks...

Check out Windows Live One Care http://www.windowsonecare.com/ .. i'm an experienced computer user, coming off of Norton and Trend Micro - and i actually dumped PC Cillin for this program. Many will call me crazy. But it interferes less in what i do while giving me ( best as i can tell ) the same level of security. It's simple stupid to configure and integrates itself with the windows firewall, explorer, and windows defender. It tunes up, defrags, backs up, scans, and protects. Get it while its free...

One care looks good but I'm wary of a company with such a history of security holes in their software "protecting" my computer

I have to Say I love AOL it's a great thing to have with a Family Surfing the net the Parent Controls are great, yeah every once in a while it won't let something access the net but it's showing me it's working and I now my kids won't be surfing anthing they shouldn't. I have always used aol and I think it just keeps getting better, I don't think it's has any problems I think those who have a problem with just don't want to let go of the control they can't trust someone else to protect thier P.C but that's cool but don't down Something that works. And about the over charges I have never had that problem If I did called them up and got my credit I get all the help I need from aol for just $9.95

you're paying how much for AOL? its 25.90 not 9.95 the netscape branded isp is 9.95 and its worse then aol

I bought a new computer and installed AOL Security Center. Everything worked great for a month, then all the sudden the anti-virus program stopped working. I un-installed an re-installed it, but it won't install properly because it can never install the latest virus definitions. I think my computer may have a virus, but every scan I've done with Norton Anti-Virus and Stinger comes up clean. Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be happening?

I read the source code for AOL SSC, and I am not stupid with computers, as I said. It is indeed McAfee underneath, and I enjoy using it, due to its being unabtrusive to my work, and I DO have NIS2006, which does the exact same thing. The point of this post was to say how helpful and practical it is to new PC users, as well as veterans.

If I had a dollar for each customer's computer that was LOADED with spyware and viruses but had AOL Security Center updated and running, I'd have enough money to go buy legitimate security software. AOL's security is to spyware as a squirt gun is to a forest fire.
